Canadian Women’s Hockey Gold Medallist Gillian Apps Marries American Rival Meghan Duggan

For the first time since they laced up their skates as kids, Gillian Apps and Meghan Duggan wore the same jersey.

Gillian has represented the Canadian National Women’s Hockey team since the 2004 World Championships. Her resume includes three Olympic gold medals, as well as three golds at the IIHF World Women’s Championships.

Meghan, meanwhile, has been a fixture of the United States women’s national ice hockey team since 2007. Her career boasts a gold medal at this year’s Pyeongchang Olympics as well as seven golds at the World Championships.

Suffice to say, the duo has faced off on the ice in some of the sport’s biggest games for more than a decade. And last weekend, they got married in a beautiful ceremony in Pownal, Maine.

Some fun facts: Canada and the United States have competed for every gold medal since the women’s world championship began in 1990. Apps took home two gold medals at the expense of her now-wife in at Vancouver 2010 and Sochi 2014. When she retired, it opened the door for Meghan to captain her team to the 2018 gold in South Korea.

And now they’ll have an entire lifetime for the rivalry to continue.
