Today’s Notable Young Entrepreneur is designer and stylist Tiffany Pratt, who’s currently starring in HGTV Canada’s Buy It! Fix It! Sell It! A dream job to say the least. Here’s why she loves it and what advice she would give other young professionals…
Elevator Pitch: Describe your job in a nutshell.
My name is Tiffany Pratt and I run my own company working as a designer and a stylist. My work in design ranges from interiors to events, clothing and products. I am currently on HGTV starring on a show called BUY IT! FIX IT! SELL IT!, where you can see my design work in action. I am also working on a craft and lifestyle book, re-launching my children’s arts and crafts line, and creating for an array of clients and projects. My days are spent with clients designing their homes, weddings, wardrobes, photo shoots and dreams. No two days are ever the same and I feel lucky every day to do what I love.
Why did you start your company? What was the inspiration for this career route?
I started working for myself seven years ago when I realized I was continually running other people’s companies for a living. I knew that if I wanted to be truly happy, I would work for myself. I eventually knew that I had what it takes to run my own show, so I jumped off the cliff and began running my own art studio called Glitter Pie and the rest is history. I have never looked back.
What is the best part of what you do on a day-to-day basis? The most challenging part?
The best iss knowing every day that I get to share and access a place in my being where what I do what comes the easiest to me and what makes me feel whole and of complete service.
The most challenging is that I cannot shut it off. I am always thinking, finding, scheming, designing, creating and problem solving… when you love what you do there are no schedules.
What is one sign that you’ve seen over the years to suggest that your work/life balance is off?
I know that my work/life balance is off when I cannot effortlessly create. The flow will stop when I have stopped filling the well and have not taken proper care of my mind, body and soul.
Where do you see yourself in five years?
I see myself in a large white studio filled with the loving, talented people I have worked with over the years collaborating together on my brand and all of the facets to it that keep growing and evolving. I see moments of blissful quiet and lots of travel. I see children from all over the world making art. I see myself hugging strangers and inspiring people to be their authentic selves. I see my life purely creative and of my own design. I see books, colours and lots of movement. I see LOVE made visible.
What does success look like to you? Does Money = Happiness?
Success looks like a trail of glitter. It looks like working hard and having a blast doing it. It looks like filling hearts and minds. It looks like a rainbow. It looks like affording exactly what I need – to do exactly what I am intended to do. Money is not happiness. Money is an open door to the energy of sharing.
What is the most memorable milestone in your career?
I do not have one. It all feels like this wild, yet steady ride.
Do you have any advice for other young professionals?
The best advice I can give is to be TRUE to who you are and what you deeply know your calling to be. Do not let anyone tell you what you should do with your life or that something is impossible. It may be hard at times, but if you stick to your guns the world will follow.
Where is your favourite place to wine/dine in your city and why?
I live at the Tandoori House on Queen Street East. Indian is my soul food. I think it is one of the best Indian spots in town.
When you’re not working how do you love to spend your “Me” time?
‘Me’ time is pretty chill. My life is so fast-paced. I love to read the stacks of beautiful books I collect. I live by the lake so yoga, meditation, paddle boarding, and a jog along the water all make me happy. I love to sleep when I can. Paint. Laugh. Dream. I am always dreaming.
Where is your favourite place to travel? Why?
I am plotting a big trip to India. The evidence of why is clear. But for the colour alone, I cannot get there quick enough.
If you had to choose a theme song, what would it be?
Today it is The Magic Position by Patrick Wolf
If you weren’t doing what you’re doing, what would you be doing?
I have no idea. I probably would have combusted out of this lifetime by now and been turned into a rainbow.
Do you support any charities? If so, which one(s) and why is that important to you?
The WWF gets monthly help from me. Always has, ever since I was in grade 5 and trying to help the polar bears. I have deep love for our planet. How we treat our real home and who resides within it outside of the human race. I am the garbage picker and the animal lover.
What to you is notable?
LOVE. COLOUR. PEACE. UNEXPECTED BEAUTY.
Blackberry, iPhone, Android, or Other?
iPhone ALL THE WAY!
Buy It! Fix It! Sell It! airs Fridays at 10pm ET/PT on HGTV Canada.
