YouTube Launches an Ad-Free Monthly Subscription Option for $9.99

It was only a matter of time before YouTube, the beloved video-sharing platform, would introduce a subscription service.

Today, the company announced that it would do just that, offering original, exclusive videos, free of those annoying advertisements. This will include feature-length films starring an assortment of high-profile vloggers, like PewDiePie, Rooster Teeth, and Lilly Singh.

It’s called YouTube Red and it will cost $9.99 a month. In its initial October 28 rollout, the service will only be available in the U.S.

The service will also allow users to save videos and watch them online on their phone or tablet. The membership extends across devices and anywhere you sign into YouTube, including the company’s recently launched Gaming app and a brand new YouTube Music app that the company announced today would be available soon.

While the ideas sounds enticing, some analysts feel that it could be a challenge to expect the site’s millions of fans who have grown accustomed to the free access to cough up the cash. Most are likely also paying for Netflix and cable, after all.

Either way, the exclusive content and absence of advertisements is an attractive draw to loyal YouTube users who prefer to cut to the chase.
