Vancouver Weekender: August 1 through 3rd, 2014

This weekend has no shortage of activities to ensure you’re kept busy, be it catching a free fireworks extravaganza, checking out one of the craziest, most colourful parades in town, hitting the beach for a free yoga session, or throwing a little culture into the mix by stopping by one of several multi-day festivals taking place around YVR

Friday

Free Yoga in Kits is back Friday night and sets up shop at the stunning Kitsilano Beach for a free session that will help loosen you up for a seriously packed weekend of revelry ahead. It’s part of the Kits Space Project and happens every Monday, Wednesday and Friday throughout the summer starting at 7pm until 8pm. You can’t get much more West Coast than this, right?

Harmony Arts Festival kicks off another year of celebrating local artists, music, food and community just in time for the weekend. This 10-day long festival takes place in West Vancouver along the waterfront and is definitely a must-do this weekend. Shop local vendors, check out the works of local artists, catch live music and enjoy the culinary creations of pop-up restaurants. The festival goes until August 10th.

The Powell Street Festival is back this weekend and brings with it plenty of Japanese cultural celebrations.  Though this festival (celebrating its 38th year) normally takes place at the Oppenheimer Park, they’ve relocated due to some protest activity. Fear not: the party will still go on and features a sumo wrestling tournament, live music, amazing Japanese cuisine to sample and art worth checking out.

Wanderlust Whistler also takes place over the course of this long weekend in, you guessed it, Whistler. What better a reason to load up the car for a day or two of backbends and downward dogs than to head up to one of our favourite spots for R&R. They’ve still got single day and multi-day passes available and a plethora of activities to check out (including concerts, a farm to table dinner, wine tastings, speakeasy sessions and great excuses to mingle with likeminded, generally cool people.

Saturday

The Honda Celebration of Light’s final night is this Saturday at English Bay. You don’t want to miss the pyrotechnic party, where Japan is set to light it up in style. Head down early, park it by the beach, and settle in for a fantastic scene. For more details or to learn more about VIP seating options (with bar service), click here.

Sunday

Come Sunday, get your Pride on and head to the Pride Parade for a full day of fun. This parade draws thousands of people excited to show their support for the LGBTQ community. Score your spot along Davie Street in the West End and gear up for one of the wildest parades in the city. Attracting crowds of more than 650,000, the Pride Parade is renowned on the international stage as one of the largest and most successful LGBTQ events in the world. Post parade, don’t forget to hit up one of the many beer gardens, grab some eats at local restaurants and catch live music that’ll get you in the groove.
