Yes, it’s hard to believe, but cuddling companies are really a thing.
And soon enough, Albertans will have access to this service in both Calgary and Edmonton with the expansion of a professional Vancouver comfort company.
Capitalizing on the concept that everyone needs a hug, Marylen Reid started the Cuddlery on the West Coast with the intention of giving people access to the healing touch of a professional cuddler.
Geared towards those who are single, lonely, or just plain down and out, anyone needing a little love and attention can essentially hire someone to be their big spoon for an hour in the privacy of their own home.
But get your head out of the gutter: these sessions are meant to be purely non-sexual with the agreement that both parties are required to leave their clothes on for the duration of the service.
Screened for the safety and security of both parties, each session can take place at home or in public but must be filmed to ensure the agreed upon conditions aren’t being violated.
So you’re probably wondering what it costs…
The standard cuddle session starts at around $35 an hour and pairs you with someone who will massage, hug or cuddle you for the duration of your time together. People in need of a little more attention will look to pay upwards of $260 per cuddle and can also pay for special services like ‘movie night’ or something called ‘spend the night’. But be prepared – these extra services don’t run cheap.
While there are definitely doubters, many studies indicate that human touch can lower blood pressure and stress, relieve anxiety, and give people a sense of social belonging they might not find anywhere else.
If the idea of cuddling is more intriguing than weird, there’s a cuddle party (independent of the Cuddlery) taking place in Calgary in the next few weeks.
Just remember to pack your nice pajamas and be the little spoon.
