Notable Now Toronto: January 24, 2014

Notable Now this week in Toronto: Robbie Burns Day, the Toronto Tea Festival, Toronto Design Offsite Festival, craft beer festival at Steam Whistle’s headquarters, Jay Z's Magna Carter World Tour, and a 24-Hour Spin-a-Thon fundraiser

Robbie Burns
Date: Jan. 27-31
Location: Various Locations

Somehow Robbie Burns Day (January 25th) has become an entire week for some – we’re looking at you, Scottish bagpipe guy. Pubs like The Caledonian will be featuring everything from Highland Dancers to plates full of haggis, not to mention numerous whisky tastings all week long. So get out and raise a glass to the greatest of Scottish poets and drink it down for Auld Lang Syne.

Tea
Date: Feb. 1, 2
Location: Toronto Reference Library (Yonge & Bloor)

Tea is so hot right now, and the arrival of the Toronto Tea Festival the first weekend of February is sure to keep it that way. There will be hundreds of samples of teas from around the world, as well as industry experts delivering presentations throughout the weekend. Whether you’re a fanatic for your favourite rooibos or you’re just learning the fine art of the steep, there’ll definitely be something here that’s worth soaking up.

Design
Date: Jan. 20-26
Location: Various Locations

The Toronto Design Offsite Festival, or TO DO as it’s known locally, has already begun. But don’t stress, just because you’ve missed the opening party doesn’t mean you don’t have time to catch some of the eye-popping installations and innovative exhibitions going on throughout the city. Both local and national designers will be featured in an effort to promote understanding and knowledge of the practice of design. From modern furniture design to 20-foot charcoal murals, we promise you’ll have a hard time keeping your jaw from falling no matter what you see.

Beer
Date: Jan. 25
Location: 255 Bremner Blvd.

As in, a craft beer festival at Steam Whistle’s headquarters at The Roundhouse. However, given the appreciation for finely tuned hops in this city, this event is going to require a solid gate crashing effort just to get in. Only on-site tickets will be up for grabs come Saturday, and with 18 of Ontario’s finest craft breweries in attendance we completely understand why you’ll have to camp out just to earn a taste.

Jay Z
Date: Jan. 27
Location: ACC

Whenever Young Hova comes to town it’s worth paying attention to, even if it’s on a Monday night and he’s more like middle-aged Hova now. The man is a walking industry and one of the best rappers to ever step to the mic. His Magna Carter World Tour has been earning rave reviews and if there’s a chance Beyoncé happens to step to the stage, who are we to deny a double billing? Considering this is Jay Z’s first solo tour in four years, we’re going to go ahead and mark it as a must-see.

Spinning
Date: Jan. 25
Location: 164 Danforth Avenue

Starting at noon on Saturday, The Peer Project, a Toronto-based non-profit youth mentoring agency that spends their time improving the lives of at-risk and newcomer kids through youth-to-youth peer mentoring, will be holding its second annual 24 Hour Spin-a-Thon fundraiser. Energia Athletics will play host to relay teams of up to 24 riders as they push themselves to the brink – all for the benefit of at-risk youth in the GTA. Sounds like they’re living their Notable life (#LYNL) to us.
