Montreal Weekender: October 31 through November 3, 2013

From a must-attend masquerade ball at Hôtel Pierre du Calvet tonight to a David-versus-Goliath docudrama at the Centaur Theatre on Sunday, there's no shortage of notable happenings for your social calendar heading into the weekend. Here's your rundown

THURSDAY
Our fun friends at Old Port’s Philemon Bar are holding their annual Halloween Classic, and with the tagline “Dress Up/Pants Down!” you know it’s going to be a total hoot. So wear, well, whatever really tickles your fancy at this place… anything goes. Grab your friends, colleagues and dates and raise a glass to celebrate the dead!

If a masquerade ball is more up your alley, Hôtel Pierre du Calvet, the oldest in Montreal, built in 1725, will be hosting a chic masquerade for young professionals and the who’s who. They will be serving delicious hors d’oeuvres, an open bar all night, along with a DJ that will keep the party going. All profits raised will be going to the Pierre du Calvet Fondation for the preservation of Quebec cultural heritage. Don’t forget your mask!

To top things off, the PANIC party put together by Love on the Beat, SAint Woods, Climaxxx and Hot Creations bring you the amazing Danny Torrence, Jay London, myfrienderic and much, much more. What’s even cooler to top it off? The theme is Mad Max and the apocalypse; how fitting that this party’s held at the chic and dungeon-like Velvet at Auberge Saint-Gabriel? If dancing, sweating and sick beats are what you are craving tonight, this is the place to be.

FRIDAY
Kick off Movember right with the MovemberMTL committee at the Burgundy Lion, supported by Movember Canada, for the 4th Annual Mo Shave Off. Men participating in Movember are required to start the month off clean shaven and register themselves at www.movember.comHarley Davidson Montreal will be out front showing off a couple new bikes and barbers from Notorious Barbershop will be giving shaves for donations. Or get shaved by one of their lovely Mo Sistas. Girlfriends, wives, and friends are encouraged to take up the role of the Mo Sista as well and shave their own gentlemen or male friends for support. Everything takes off around 7pm, so don’t miss out!

The 2nd edition of TASTE MTL, where over 125 participating restaurants will showcase what they’re made of during 11 days of culinary festivities and fun around the city, starts today. This Tourisme Montreal initiative is presented by the Produits d’érable du Québec in collaboration with the SAQ and promises to be better than ever. More than 125 restaurants across the city will feature delicious and unique table d’hôte menus ranging from $19, $29 and $39, including a $19 late-night menu for all the partygoers. Get your foodie on!

SATURDAY
Old Montreal’s chic Joverse transforms into a giant dance floor and pays homage to that 70s funky-cult dance show called “Soul Train.” Come dressed the part, and get into the spirit of funkiness and Halloween with soul! Get creative with your 70s, funky and cool attire to impress. With the best time-honoured beats re-mixed with a splash of disco house, you will guarantee shake your bell bottoms off!

Get ready for a trip back in time as “A Night to Remember” celebrates the swinging 60s! This year’s theme is Mad Men, so come dressed in your best Don Draper suit or cocktail dress. Special VIP guests include former Hab Oleg Petrov, John “The Bull” Makdessi of UFC fame, and local recording artist Annakin Slayd. There will be a silent auction with lots of great items to be won, master shucker Daniel Notkin is back and will be running his Premium Oyster Bar that is sure to impress, and there will also be other delectable eats. DJ Quan Starr & DJ Lenny will keep the party bumping and the dance floor grooving. The night will raise much-needed funds for the Alzheimer’s Society of Montreal (ASM).

SUNDAY
Centaur Theatre brings you another gem, and today’s the perfect day to check it out. “Seeds” is a gripping, modern-day David-versus-Goliath docudrama that chronicles the epic legal showdown between Saskatchewan farmer Percy Schmeiser and Monsanto. Based on court trial transcripts and interviews, the play brings us behind the scenes through a maze of patent wars, opinionated scientists and clashes between farmers and the biotechnology industry.

Calling all animal lovers! The Salon national des animaux de compagnie (SNAC) is the largest pet show in Canada and is taking place all weekend. The event features all types of animals and showcases breeders, recognized associations, veterinarians, businesses, and more. Over the past few years, major innovations have been created at the SNAC; they were the first show to only allow champion dog breeders, the first to ban the terrible “puppy mills,” the first event to include a cat and dog show as part of the public exhibitions, the first show to implement an international symposium on dog behaviour or an animal advertising competition, and more. Be part of this year’s movement and join this fun event!
