Montreal Weekender: April 3 through 6, 2014

From La Maison Ogilvy’s must-attend in-store shopping event tonight to a host of fundraisers we can only recommend RSVP'ing immediately for, here's a rundown of everything young professionals in Montreal should have on their radar heading into the weekend

THURSDAY
Luxury retailer La Maison Ogilvy’s urban level expansion has created quite the buzz and to celebrate, the lower level will host a full-day, in-store shopping event. Brand reps, raffles and discounts are just a few things to expect when you pop by. DJ SLV, Yo’Dough Cookies, a M.A.C touch-up station and “mocktails” will be on-site kicking off at 5pm. This is the perfect way to start your weekend… especially with your girlfriends.

Come and participate in a masquerade event during which you will witness captivating acrobatic performances in a mysterious carnival atmosphere at the chic WAVE Complex. It’ll be a truly amazing night to celebrate life and remember those who have lost their battle to lung cancer. The last LUNGevity event had over 300 young professionals attend and raised over $120,000; let’s make it bigger and better this year. Tickets are $150 and include thrilling performances, open bar, cocktail dinatoire, live DJ, a silent auction and much more. All proceeds will benefit lung cancer research at the Jewish General Hospital.

FRIDAY
All you extreme sports fanatics, pack your overnight bags and head over to Saint-Sauveur for the 13th edition of the Ride Shakedown starting today. Professional and amateur snowboarders from all over the world will compete for a total prize of $50,000 in the rail and big air categories. Spectators can expect a halftime show, partners village, booth, an autograph session with pros, after parties, live DJs, and much more – this will be a wild one.

For a little taste of Buenos Aires, check out the Theatre Maissoneuve for Tango Legends.” The group, whose founders were announced as “Outstanding Personalities of Culture” in Buenos Aires in November 2012, consists of 12 award-winning dancers, a skillful singer and the remarkable Emiliano & Lautaro Greco Quintet, all regarded as masters in their homeland of Argentina. We say spicy!

SATURDAY
A new player is stepping into the Old Montreal clubbing scene with the official arrival of “Russian” on 390 St-Jacques Ouest. All we know about this spot so far is that the space features slick décor, houses one of the best state-of-the-art digital sound systems in North America, and will present a musical program featuring a rotation of Montreal’s finest DJs, live performers and international artists – not too shabby.

Hailing all the way from the land of Ikea, The Sounds will be rocking the roof off the Corona Theatre tonight. If you’ve never heard of them, let’s just say you can compare them to the style of new wave acts such as Blondie, The Cars, the Epoxies and Missing Persons – basically epic bands! We’ve seen them live before and if a raw indie rock experience is something you crave, then this should be on your Saturday plate.

SUNDAY
It’s time for the 4th Annual Alesia’s Magnolias Fundraiser benefiting the Montreal Childrens’ Hospital Cardiology Department taking place at the Palais De Congres. Alesia’s Magnolias is an annual fundraising event held as a tribute to Alesia, the daughter of the founders, who passed away from an extremely rare heart condition in May 2010 at the age of two.

Alesia’s Magnolias is an indoor fair for children but people of all ages attend to support this amazing cause. With a modest entrance fee of $15 that includes live performances and lunch, there is no excuse to miss this.

Sunday night is the perfect time to get lazy and catch a good flick. If you still haven’t seen Wes Anderson’s genius that is “The Grand Budapest Hotel,” well, our dear Notables, you are seriously missing out. With a cast that just can’t get any more stellar and filmography that only Anderson knows how to execute in utter perfection, this tale recounts the adventures of Gustave H., a legendary concierge at a famous European hotel between the wars, and Zero Moustafa, the lobby boy who becomes his most trusted friend. Thank us later.
