Have You Herd About the New Way to Share Music?

For busy, on-the-go young professionals, it can sometimes be tough to keep up with all the latest music or organize our libraries regularly. Herd.fm is a mobile app developed by a team of Torontonians that does just that...and much more. You might as well open your iTunes App now

For the music and technology-loving young professional, Herd.fm has taken the best of many worlds to create a cohesive and unmatched mobile music experience that is sure to become the new standard for music sharing and discovery on mobile devices. Herd.fm’s new app (currently only available on the iPhone) provides a convenient, effective and foolproof way to share a song or a mini-mix with your friends. It links to your social networks, analyzes your iTunes library and gives instant recommendations when you share. A fun patent-pending feature, the “Trak Journey” uses your phone’s geo-location capability to visually map where your music travels around the world, who is listening and how influential you are…because we know that YPs sometimes need a little validation.

Herd.fm uses your iTunes listening history and Facebook sharing activity to display a snapshot of your recent favorites and as a basis for appropriately tailoring music recommendations from Last.fm’s API and Herd.fm’s proprietary algorithm. This allows YPs to share the music that they are loving at the moment or to manually select songs from iTunes for customized “mini-mixes” that can be shared with a few simple taps as easily as texting. Every time you share a song or mini-mix to a friend, Facebook or Twitter through Herd.fm, you’re rewarded with an instant tailored music recommendation to your iPhone. Sounds pretty sweet to us.

The best part is that this all takes place on mobile, allowing people to share and discover music where ever they go, not just on their desktop, which is perfect for the multi-tasking young professional. Now you don’t have to waste your precious time spending hours searching for new music on a tiny screen on sites that won’t let you play music through your phone. Conveniently, integration of the Soundcloud and YouTube APIs lets you stream these songs in full without leaving the app. With Herd.fm, you don’t have to search for the song to play it; it’s right there with every share. Herd.fm also enhances music discovery by showing artist tour dates via Songkick’s concert API and enables every song you discover to be purchased through affiliates on iTunes.

As the popularity of iPhones has soared and mobile devices have become central to the young professional music collection, the ability to share songs with others has until now remained difficult. The app was developed by young Canadian entrepreneurs themselves who were getting sick and tired of not having a way to share and discover cool new music on their phones and were determined to find a solution to do just that.

Herd.fm was founded in 2010 when participants at the NBC Universal Matchmaking Program came together to create a music discovery app on mobile phones. The founding team includes Torontonians James Milward, Founder of the award-winning interactive boutique Secret Location; Davin Lengyel, entrepreneur and IP lawyer; and Romeo Candido, MuchMusic Producer/Editor and Director. Executive team member David Nam was the former VP of Product and Marketing at MXP4 and Head of Marketing at Last.fm. Together, the group has provided us with a service that finally gives you something back for all of your sharing!

Herd.fm launched its first version in March 2011 and is based in Toronto, Canada.
