We all have one, that favourite diner or coffee shop that is a staple in our morning routine. But here in YYC, there are a great collection of these spots that are open late as well. They have the same laidback vibe, making them the perfect spot when you are looking for a place to go after the sun has gone down. The following five are our favourites…
Blue Star Diner – 809 1st Ave. NE
This favourite breakfast spot of ours opened this summer in Bridgeland and has been jammed daily. They are now expanding their hours and introducing a dinner menu that includes “tacos, burgers, whiskey, and wine.” With an offering like that, they’re a star if you ask us.
Higher Ground – 1126 Kensington Rd. NW
This coffee shop is located in the heart of Kensington and is a huge part of the community’s pulse. The space is inviting and warm, maybe because of the fireplace, and you will often find people tucked away in a corner sipping a coffee as they chat with colleagues. Their late hours make it the perfect spot when you are looking for a chill spot to catch up with friends after work.
Diner Deluxe – 804 Edmonton Trail NE
This diner has been a staple for Calgary’s brunch crowd for over a decade and it is pretty standard to be waiting in line for a table Saturday or Sunday mornings. But did you know Diner Deluxe is a great spot for a satisfying and gourmet diner cuisine? They also offer an amazing cocktail and wine list. Perhaps a little Prosecco with your Veal Meatloaf? We say yes.
Purple Perk – 2212 4th St. SW
Located in Mission, this coffee shop is always bustling and it’s not unusual to see many YPs working away on their laptops as they sip a latte. With late night hours –they are open until 10pm Sun.-Wed. and 11pm Thurs.-Sat. – Purple Perk is a great place when you just want to take it easy. Their food menu has a great selection so you know you won’t go hungry if you are working to meet that deadline.
Caffe Beano – 1613 9th St. W
Just off of 17th Ave., Caffe Beano is as entertaining in the evening as it is throughout the day. Caffe Beano is known for its eclectic vibe and is a favourite amongst many of YYC’s artists and creative types. They are open until midnight every night, so whether you want to spend an evening chatting with friends or a have a quiet one catching up on some writing, Beano is a great late spot.
