Event Recap: Indian Summer Festival Gala

Late last week we got decked out to attend one of Vancouver’s most culturally enticing (and tasty) festival launch galas for the Indian Summer Festival, which all went down in the picturesque setting that is Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden. Read on to learn more about this spectacular kick-off to 10 days of celebrating Indian arts, ideas and diversity

This sold-out event attracted a colourful mix of the city’s hippest and chicest people. Touted as ‘A Culinary Tour of Asia’ and curated by none other than celeb-chef and one of the newest Dragons to join Dragons’ Den, Vikram Vij, we were impressed.

The Indian Summer Festival party truly began after we made our way down the red carpet and were ushered inside the walls surrounding the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen gardenscape, .

Having wisely skipped on dinner, our appetites were more than satisfied by the offerings of about a dozen or so different Asian-inspired culinary establishments from throughout Vancouver. We tasted our way through a maze of food – noshing on everything from seafood to curry, Thai bites to Chinese tapas, and washing it down with a bevy of different wines that complimented the cuisine.

Our emcee for the evening (Johanna Wagstaffe of CBC News) kept the crowd entertained, as did one of several roaming entertainers and musicians.  All elements were meant to give the collected crowd of attendees a taste of what’s in store as for the rest of the festival.

Different areas of the gardens housed specific performers or displays meant to showcase elements of art and inspiration behind the Indian Summer Festival… it was kind of like playing a game of choose-your-own-adventure with a cultural surprise found around every corner.
