Calgary Weekender: January 31 to February 2, 2014

From a night at the Loose Moose Theatre Company kicking off the weekend tonight to the launch of the Exposure Film Fest, we've covered all of the notable happenings you should have on your social calendar heading into the break

Friday

Maestro Improviser
Get loose this weekend with the Loose Moose Theatre Company. Welcome to the crash and burn elimination-style of comedy known as ‘Maestro Improviser’, which takes the concept of audience participation to a new level of fun. Actors are chosen to perform impromptu scenes that the audience judges and awards with points. Loose Moose is a quick cab ride from downtown and Inglewood once you’ve had your fill of improv hilarity. Oh, what fun. Tickets are $15.

Saturday

Wine Stage
On Saturday, February 1, One Yellow Rabbit presents Wine Stage. You’ll get to sample delicious snacks from Brava Bistro, Cookbook Company and Selkirk Grill while you try an assortment of wines. Kensington Wine Market, J Webb, Vinestone Wine Co, Metrovino, Vinearts and many more local wine boutiques will be pouring their favourite reds, whites and sparkling. All the fun takes place at Gasoline Alley in Heritage Park’s Historical Village (1900 Heritage Drive SW). Tickets are $125 and are going fast!

Holt Renfrew Party
On Saturday, Holt Renfrew is hosting a special kind of jewellery party. Designer Anzie Stein will be showing off her designer items from 11am to 5pm. Create your own custom jewellery, look for a thoughtful Valentine’s Day present for your sweetheart or use this opportunity to get some great styling advice. As if you needed an excuse to shop in Holt’s! After your shopping adventure, you can hit one of the many great restaurants on Stephen Avenue for a late brunch or happy hour special. Local on 8th or the Libertine are always great Saturday afternoon picks.

Big Winter Classic
This totally awesome event celebrates winter and patio culture in Calgary. Starting at 1pm and continuing late into the night, this will be the first-ever Big Winter Classic. The Ship and Anchor will ring in the occasion by having a stage set up on their patio for performances by Jung People, The Mandates, The Soft Options, and The Hockey Fight. This is one of those events that make you realize you live in a pretty cool city. Be there or be square.

Saturday and Sunday

Exposure
Exposure Film Fest starts this weekend. For the month of February, Calgary and Banff will be treated to a myriad of fantastic exhibits that showcase some of today’s hottest photographers. Starting on February 1, Art Central is displaying the exhibit ‘The Quiet Rebuild’. You’ll love these beautiful large format photographs in black and white courtesy of award-winning photographer Alexis Marie Chute. If you’re up for a bit of a tour, then stop by the Glenbow Museum, Trepanier Baer and New Zone Gallery, art spaces that are all in the downtown area.

Sunday
On Sunday night you should head to Wine-Ohs to enjoy an entertaining night of Flamenco dancing. Fall in love with the dance, song and culture of Spain while enjoying a little vino with some delicious tapas. Internationally-acclaimed Flamenco singer Cele will be joining Calo and company on stage. The show will run from 7 until 9pm. Tickets are $20 online and $27 at the door. This beats the heck out of staying home to watch re-runs of Grey’s Anatomy.
