Calgary Weekender: January 10 through 12, 2014

It's a weekend of music and art in Calgary, with a few notable restaurant recommendations sprinkled in between for good measure. We've rounded up all the notable spots for your social calendar in this week's edition of the Weekender

Friday

Shout Out Outs
The Shout Out Outs will be playing at the Gateway this Friday. This dance punk group has a love for disco, techno, psychedelic rock and synthesizers. With 4 bass players and 2 drum sets, you’ll have a hard time staying off the dance floor.  The Gateway is located on the SAIT campus, and if you don’t feel like driving, the C-train is a great option for getting there. Tickets can be purchased online. In true campus style, you can also grab a slice of pizza at the Gateway if you need a snack before the show.

ART PARTY
Stride Gallery re-opens this week. The 2014 season kicks off with Megan Morman’s ART PARTY, an installation with life-size portraits and their cats. The portraits have been created using plastic beads, a very unique choice of material.  Morman’s work has been shown at Artspace, Galerie San Nom, the Art Gallery of Alberta and Neutral Ground. Mormon works out of Lethbridge, Alberta. Taste Restaurant is only a few blocks away if you are looking for dinner or drinks after the show. Start with the pretzel bits!

Saturday

Molson Canadian Block Party
Banff is hosting the Molson Canadian Block Party this Saturday to celebrate the Sochi 2014 Olympics. CBC’s George Stroumboulopoulos will host the event and there will be performances by The Arkells and The Sheepdogs. All the fun will be happening around the main stage that will be set up right on Banff Avenue. Let’s give our athletes a memorable send-off to the winter games! GRIFFEST
Broken City is throwing an all ages show on Saturday as a benefit concert for Autism. HighKicks, Napalmpom and Mark Mills will be rocking out to raise money for the cause. Admission to the show is $10, which will go to The Behaviour Therapy and Learning Centre and the Cluster Program at R.T. Alderman (a program set up to support autistic kids and their development). The guest of honour and the inspiration for this show is an amazing young boy who is front row and centre for many of the rock shows in Calgary. Come out and help him celebrate his 13th birthday this weekend.

Carly’s Angels
Lolita’s Bar presents Carly’s Angels, a drag show that has kept audiences in stitches for the past 10 years. These female impersonators entertain guests with catchy music, outlandish costumes and bawdy humour. To keep the performance fresh, the material is changed up every month so you never know what surprises you’re in for at the show. Tickets to Carly’s Angels are $48 and tend to sell out quickly, so book your tickets as soon as you can.

Friday, Saturday and Sunday

The Cat in the Hat
Storybook Theatre presents the classic and much-loved Cat in the Hat by Dr. Seuss. You’ll fall in love with this classic children’s story about what happens one rainy afternoon when two bored kids let a rambunctious cat into their house. Will the kids manage to get their house back in shape before their mother returns home? This is a one-act play that last roughly 60 minutes and is geared for all ages. Tickets are $25 for adults.
