Calgary Weekender: December 18 through 21, 2014

There’s no escaping Christmas now. With less than a week to go, we’re recommending you celebrate the season with some kick-ass musicians, a little bit of entertainment in the form of drag or burlesque, and a solstice party with more electronic acts than Santa has reindeer. This is no time to be a scrooge, so get into the eggnog and dance the night away

Along with whatever we find under a tree or inside a really uncomfortable sock, this weekend we are being given the gift of another Winter Solstice; the longest night of the year. And if there’s any stretch of year when we could use a bit more time – whether it’s time on or time off – it’s the week before Christmas.

But we know that you know where to find the busiest malls, the most congested roads and the most questionable extended family members. So let us take care of the other stuff. You know, the fun stuff.

Your weekend starts now, Calgary…

THURSDAY
Get into the spirit of Christmas with the Huron Carole happening at Jack Singer Concert Hall. This will be the most wholesome thing you do this weekend.

If you’re needing to blow off some pre-Christmas steam then pull up a barstool at Craft and enjoy a selection of over 100 beers on tap. Sip on seasonals or try one of their many artisanal selections.

You know we love to encourage starting your weekend early so this is what we’re suggesting: The Off Cut Bar is having their Speakeasy Thursday that includes some seriously seductive bourbon cocktails and some even sexier burlesque dancers.

If you call in sick we won’t judge you.

FRIDAY
To escape the tinsel and madness of mall shopping you’ll find salvation in Broken City’s Friday night program. DJ Pump will help you forget all about stocking stuffers.

Or you could catch JJ Shiplett at Ironwood Bar – only the best venue in the South East.

But for those of you who are into the Christmas cheer, Local 510 is throwing an eggnog party with DJ Wah. If you’ve already spent your whole role on gifts you’ll be pleased to know this is a free event.

SATURDAY
Saturday night you can celebrate the solstice with BassBus as they throw a 2 level DJ Party in Marda Loop. Folks, these parties NEVER disappoint.

If you’re only going to do one Christmas related activity this weekend make it Carol of the Belles. All your favourite girls of Calgary’s music scene are hosting this event at the Arrata Opera Centre. A big shout out to Kenna Burima, Samantha Savage Smith, and Eve Hell.

If you’re not at the opera house we assume you’ll be at Lolita’s Lounge watching the best drag show of your life.

SUNDAY
We know you might be sick of hearing about markets but how can you go wrong with Market Collective? This is where last minute shoppers will find the signatures gifts they’ve been looking for, not to mention the photo booth here is good for making a few holiday memories.

After the market, Sunday is going to turn into one hot mess with a screening of Love Actually at the Plaza followed by what’s being called ‘one big gay party’ at Republic.

We recommend you start this holiday adventure with boozy cider at Wine Bar.
