Bah, Humbug: Poll Shows Canadians Haven’t Started Their Christmas Shopping

With December 25th only three days away, the shopping hours are becoming nerve-rackingly limited.

But if you’re not among those who started their shopping early, you’re not alone.

A survey by Angus Reid for CIBC found that Canadian shoppers are going to be spending the next few days elbowing their way through crowded malls to finish their holiday shopping.

As of Dec. 15, 69 per cent of Canadians still haven’t finished their holiday shopping, and 15 per cent of those who answered hadn’t even started.

Millennials were among those most behind, with three quarters of the 18-34 age group saying they still had lots of shopping to do.

Those who had done some shopping had spent an average of $601; last year’s poll found the average was $678.

Poll results also showed that shoppers from British Columbia have already spent the most, spending an average of $871 as of Dec. 15, and shoppers from Quebec haven’t shelled out very much, only spending $383.

The poll surveyed 1,519 people and is considered accurate within 2.08 per cent 19 times out of 20, with results fluctuating due to education, age, gender and region, CP24 reports.

And if for whatever reason you can’t make it into the mall before the big day, many convenient stores will be open on the 25th so you can always grab your brother the last-minute squeegee brush he always wanted.
