Amber Heard Will Donate Her Entire $7 Million Divorce Settlement to Charity

Heartthrob Johnny Depp and his now ex-wife Amber Heard have been dominating headlines almost as much as the Olympic athletes have.

Their turbulent relationship – plagued with claims of domestic abuse – is now known to everyone who follows pop culture (and even those who don’t).

But Heard wants everyone to know that their recent divorce has nothing to do with money.

Just a few days after reaching a settlement in her divorce from Depp, 30-year-old Heard has announced that she will donate her entire $9 CAD million settlement to charity.

“As described in the restraining order and divorce settlement, money played no role for me personally and never has, except to the extent that I could donate it to charity and, in doing so, hopefully help those less able to defend themselves,” Heard said in a statement to People magazine on Thursday.

“The amount received in the divorce was $7 million USD and $7 million USD is being donated. This is over and above any funds that I have given away in the past and will continue to give away in the future.”

As reported by The Guardian, the money will be split between the American Civil Liberties Union and its efforts to combat violence against women and the Children’s Hospital Los Angeles.

The former couple reached a divorce settlement outside of court the day before their restraining order hearing was scheduled to begin.

Despite evidence that millions of people have already seen, a judge dismissed the domestic violence case against Depp on Tuesday and ended the temporary restraining order requested by Heard back in May.

Heard has accused Depp of being physically and emotionally abusive during their five-year relationship.

“During the entirety of our relationship, Johnny has been verbally and physically abusive to me,” Heard wrote in her sworn declaration. “I endured excessive emotional, verbal and physical abuse from Johnny, which has included angry, hostile, humiliating and threatening assaults to me whenever I questioned his authority or disagreed with him.”

Depp’s erratic behaviour is confirmed and documented in videos that have found their way to the internet. A recent video shows Depp in a rage, swearing, slamming doors and smashing a glass of wine on the ground at what appears to be first thing in the morning.

The couple met in 2011 while filming “The Rum Diaries” and married on February 3, 2015.

Heard filed for divorce on May 23, citing irreconcilable differences.

“Our relationship was intensely passionate and at times volatile, but always bound by love,” a joint statement released by Heard and Depp said. “Neither party has made false accusations for financial gain. There was never any intent of physical or emotional harm. Amber wishes the best for Johnny in the future.”

Hopefully Depp’s future will include the help and treatment he clearly needs.
