Ok, so there have already been far too many days where it was cooler than a polar bear’s toenails (oh, hell). But just because it’s cold it doesn’t mean we all have to be stiffs.
There’s a whole slew of stuff to keep you warm, well fed, and happy this weekend and realistically, what’s time off in December without a good stretch of time on in November.
Just stick with us, Calgary and you’ll be all right.
The weekend starts now…
ALL WEEKEND
CUFF Docs
This month is all about cinema. The Calgary Underground Film Festival’s CUFF DOCS takes place this weekend and that means 4 days of movie magic. From the 20th to the 23rd the Globe Cinema (617, 8th Avenue SW) will be showing a collection of truly fascinating films that focus on everything from road trips to murder. This is going to be so much better than watching Here Comes Honey Boo Boo re-runs.
Dance Montage
This weekend Dance Montage celebrates 45 years of creative movement with a performance that promises to keep guests more than enthralled. Taking cues from a few different genres, audience members can look forward to dance routines that draw on jazz, Caribbean, improv, hip-hop, and contemporary dance. With over 80 dancers, you’re sure to be amazed. Tickets are available for Thursday, Friday and Saturday night at 8 pm with a Saturday matinee at 2 pm.
THURSDAY
Jillionaire
For the weekend warriors out there who have the stamina to start their weekends early, you’ll be pleased to know that Jillionaire is hitting the HIFI club. A veteran of the dancehall scene, his beats have been described as ‘Tropical Bass’ and his unique sounds have made him a leading authority on both indie dance and Caribbean Soca. Touring the globe with superstars like Diplo and Switch of Major Lazer, you can count on seeing an epic show tonight. You might even want to wear your booty shorts.
FRIDAY
Lauren Bagliore
Just in time for the Inglewood Christmas Market that kicks off this week, the newest upscale boutique in YYC will also be opening its doors in the neighbourhood. Before you start picking out stocking stuffers for everyone on your list, you’ll want to stop by Lauren Bagliore’s concept shop (917 11th Street SE) to see her latest collection of limited edition items. Inspired by many of the shops you’d find in New York, you’ll probably feel a little more cosmopolitan after stepping inside. So go ahead and treat yourself to something nice for the holidays and get ready to strut your stuff in designer goods at your next big event.
SATURDAY
The Nash
At last, the much anticipated Nash Restaurant & Off- Cut Bar is open. Chef Michael Noble, whose name is synonymous with Calgary dining, is the man behind the concept and thanks to him Inglewood just got a whole lot more exciting. The newest hot spot in town is located in the historic National Hotel, best known as a heritage building with a colourful past. Anyone who’s dined at Noble’s restaurant NOtaBLE in Montgomery won’t need any further convincing and if brown liquor is your thing then you’ll love the bourbon focused cocktail menu at the new Off-Cut Bar.
SUNDAY
Pulse Workshop
This weekend, you can take part in the ‘Buzz About Super Foods’ workshop with nutritionist Lisa Scheffelamier. This health guru will be educating everyone in attendance on all the wonder foods your body really shouldn’t be without. You’ll learn what makes these ingredients essential to good living and how to incorporate them into the your daily routine. Expect lots of delicious treats, an engaging atmosphere, and helpful information.
