9 New Vancouver Restaurants You Need to Check Out This January

You stuffed yourself silly and drank yourself into oblivion last month. But that was last year, so why starve yourself of some of the great new eateries this January?

With restaurants, cafes and eateries all opening up around the city, there’s something for everyone (and not a turkey in sight).

So since there’s no excuse to stay in, give your dry January the heave-ho with these fantastic new Vancouver venues.

Vij’s
Vikram Vij’s new restaurant on Cambie Street opened back in December, serving modern Indian cuisine. The Indian-born Canadian chef and TV personality will be serving the same food as his other Vancouver restaurant, but in a retro-looking space with a rooftop deck that’ll be available once things warm up later in the year.

Kahve Café
Located next to Enflux in Kitsilano, this is a new business venture by the gift shop owner, who sells jewellery, décor and homeware next door. This space will serve Elysian coffee, light lunches like soup and sandwiches, and tasty treats like muffins and scones brought in from Cadeaux bakery. Customers can peruse the items whilst enjoying a cup of West Coast roasted coffee.

Osteria Savio Volpe
Meaning “wise fox,” this new restaurant near the Kingsway and Fraser intersection has huge windows, a wood burning oven, and a central bar that offers delicious Italian fare in an unpretentious and welcoming environment. Although they’re touting a simple, rustic style of cooking, everything is made with the best ingredients, and all in house.

Hapa Ramen
The standalone Hapa Ramen shop on Robson is the latest project from Justin Ault, owner of Hapa Izakaya. Currently the menu offers just three bowls of ramen, but more flavour combinations will be introduced later in the year. The signature dish is a kimchi ramen, which you can enjoy alongside an alcoholic (or non-alcoholic) beverage.

The Taste and See Shop
Innocent coffee has transformed, moving from its West 4th home to a new store on West 1st. Partnering up with Moving Coffee, they’ll be running the place as usual Monday-Friday and then hosting cupping barista workshops and tasting events on the weekend. While they will no longer sell their home-baked goods, patrons can buy pastries from local suppliers.

Tangram Creamery
It may not seem like the ideal time to be buying ice cream, but with flavours like Black Sesame, London Fog and Houjicha (Japanese roasted tea), you might just find yourself succumbing to the chilly dessert. If you’re off dairy, try one of their fruity sorbets or get your fix with an affogato made with their espresso machine.

Grotto Italian
From the restauranteur who gave the West End barbeque joint Buckstop comes Grotto-Italian – a basement bar and eatery on Davie Street. The menu is simple and tasty, serving the usual suspects like pizza, pasta and delicious brunch options. In terms of drinks, there’s a large collection of Italian wines and spirits, and lots of great cocktails inspired by owner Fiona Grieves’ range of Spitfire Bitters.

Bao Down
Gastown’s Asian fusion eatery serving steamed buns and sandwiches has expanded into Vancouver’s Olympic Village with their January launch of Bao Down Gastropub + Raw Bar. It’s widening its Asian flavours with new tastes like Singapore Slaw, Lobster Feu and Thai charcoal-grilled oysters and prawns. The décor is young and vibrant, with a murl from Taka Sudo and 80s framed movie posters.

Did’s Pizza
Returning after a 20-year hiatus, Did’s pizza is back, serving the delicious stuff by the slice. After moving to L.A to open up shop on Venice Beach, Mr Did has returned with his bakery-style pizza with everything made from scratch in-house at its new Dunsmuir Street location.
