Why You Should Expand Your Circle of Friends

Do you ever notice that fellow young professionals begin to sound, look and dress alike among certain social cliques? Most YPs have their group of friends that they have had for years. Do you ever notice that fellow young professionals begin to sound, look and dress alike among certain social cliques? Most YPs have their group of friends that they have had for years. Just like in work and relationships, we can fall into a “comfort zone” within our groups of friends. Here is why you should expand your social circle.

Always Something to Do
The more friends you have, the more social options you have. If your group of friends is going to a party that your ex will be at, you can meet other friends at a bar across town, call another, and hit up a movie or check out a hot new restaurant instead.

Gain Perspective
Many young professionals with close-knit groups of friends made these friends in childhood, high school or university – when we were all very different people than we are today. Expanding your social circle and getting to know others can open your eyes to new cultures, social backgrounds and ways of life. You will have a better understanding of people in general – the hipster, the artist and the ex-pat alike.

Networking
Let’s be honest: most of the time, it’s not what you know, it’s who you know. Many jobs are the result of referrals, as are new clients and business relationships. New friends may have other friends (or friends of friends) that may benefit you professionally.

Learn
You can learn a lot from having different groups of friends; maybe you develop a new passion, discover your city’s underground arts scene or improve your golf or tennis game. You may be more inclined to hit the tennis court, the ski slopes or an art class if you have a friend to share the experience with.

Support
Most young professionals are heavily involved in charitable initiatives in their respective cities. The more people you know, the more support you have for things like attendance at your charity event, to sponsor your charity bike ride or attendance at your art exhibit or performance.
