This New Translator Technology Could Change Everything

For most of us, trying out the lingo while on vacation is a bit of a struggle.

At best you’re met with sympathetic looks from locals; worst case scenario, it’s grounds for ejecting you from your hotel when you tell the concierge you’re “horny” instead of “hot.”

For the linguistically challenged among us, a miracle has arrived in the form of The Pilot, an in-ear translation device that translates foreign languages for us in real-time.

The wearable translator uses translation technology to let two people speak different languages and still understand one another clearly.

Meaning, it’s time to throw away the phrase book and say bonjour to your passport to communicating with locals.

So if your travel icon t-shirt is in the laundry, you can still get over those language barriers with ease.

The ear piece will allow real-time translations in French, Spanish, Italian and English. Plus, it comes with an app so you can toggle through any other languages that you want to translate the conversation into.

What forced Andrew Ochoa, the founder and CEO at Waverly Labs, to stop wishing and make real-time translation a reality? Desperation to understand that Spanish bartender?

Well, no. It was, of course, a girl – more specifically, a French girl – Andrew admits bashfully, that led him to create The Pilot.

“It’s the dream, you know?” said the creator. “A life untethered, free of language barriers. It’s just that it’s no longer a dream anymore – it’s real.”

And it’s not just great for those travelling the world, or for use on brief business trips.

In the video Andrew shows us how easy it is to chat with someone speaking a foreign language simply by both inserting the in-ear device into their ears and setting the respective language.

The Pilot will hit shelves in September and will cost $129. For now you can sign up on their early bird waitlist to reserve one.
