The Weekender: January 13 to 15, 2016

What's happening in your corner of the country this weekend?

What’s happening in your corner of the country this weekend? To ease your FOMO, we’ve curated a selection of fun events in some of the nation’s major markets.

HALIFAX

The Maritime Museum of the Atlantic is getting in on Halifax’s night life: For one night, the Museum’s Small Crafts Room will come to life, hosting Beats ‘N’ Boatsfrom 8pm to 1am. Expect amazing visual arts, thumping beats, circus acts and a hopping dance floor.

MONTREAL

With the year-long celebration of Montreal’s 375th birthday happening all year, there’s no shortage of things to do every. single. day. Check out the final weekend of Barbegazi (which translates to “frozen beard” and is meant to evoke the Canadian love for all things winter) this weekend, for outdoor fun that won’t cost you a cent. It’s a winter sports festival, with obstacle courses, skating, tree-throwing competitions and food trucks (obviously), etc. You can also check out the Igloofest after-party on Saturday night.

TORONTO

Lower Ossington Theatre (100A Ossington Ave.) is hosting a Brew & View Singalong of RENT! The Musical on Friday evening. You and your squad can grab a pint and belt out “525,600 minutes…how do you measure, measure a year?” without shame. Not up on your RENT! references? Download the movie for a crash course.

Check out the Evergreen Brickworks Evergreen Winter Village while you still can (especially since it’s only supposed to be marginally arctic this weekend). Open on weekends from 11am to 6pm until February 28, you can shop, eat and skate to your heart’s content.

CALGARY

The High Performance Rodeo, Calgary’s international festival of the arts, invades the city from January 5 to February 2 this year. With live performances (think theatre, music, dance and multidisciplinary art) at venues all over Calgary, you’re sure to find something that inspires.

EDMONTON

Indulge your love of vintage (honestly, who doesn’t love retro, at least a little bit?) at the Loveable Dives: Vintage Colour Photography Exhibition, held all month long at The New West (10525 111 Ave.), The Garneau Pub (8414 109 St.), The Hilltop Pub (8220 106 Ave.) and The Sands Lounge (12340 Fort Rd.). Produced by Chronic Nostalgic, all of the images in the exhibits are sourced from amateur collections.

VANCOUVER

Vancouver has seen much growth in the craft brewery market in recent years. Check out some of the goods for yourself on the North Vancouver Craft Brewery Tour on Saturday. After meeting at one of two pick-up locations, you’ll tour four different breweries, with 4+ samples at each location. Breweries include Black Kettle Brewing, Bridge Brewing Company, Deep Cove Brewers and Distillers, and Hearthstone Brewing.
