Summer Lovin’: How to Look Your Best at Three Summer Events

Summer style can sometimes be tricky, non? Like, how much skin is too much when attending a garden party with your boss? What does one wear to a mid-summer night’s gala? And how can you put your best foot forward when hopping over to a cocktail party after work? Well, as always, let’s look to some sartorially savvy stars to get some inspiration

Summer style can sometimes be tricky, non? Like, how much skin is too much when attending a garden party with your boss? What does one wear to a mid-summer night’s gala? And how can you put your best foot forward when hopping over to a cocktail party after work? Well, as always, let’s look to some sartorially savvy stars to get some inspiration for these most important of summer events, all while praising the warm weather gods!

Casual Garden Party
Ladies, have fun with pattern while you still can by bringing out some florals or brightly hued textiles all in the name of a lovely warm breeze. Mad Men’s Elizabeth Moss recently rocked a Clover Canyon dress that I can’t stop thinking about.

And gents, follow in the footsteps of another handsome Canadian man and emulate Joshua Jackson’s plaid shirt and shorts combo, which he wore to a Memorial Day party this past weekend. And to easily dress up this look, simply tuck in your shirt and add a classic leather belt.

Summer Gala
Girls, galas allow for a little more risk, but don’t go too far, especially when in the company of someone from your company! Strapless is grand, a la Marion Cotillard, on the Cannes red carpet, but make sure your dress is longer to hide your legs. And vice versa, if you want to wear a cocktail dress, cover up those arms to avoid looking like a Victoria’s Secret wannabe.

Dudes, let me give you a small respite from the tux vs. summer heat debate. How about a lighter shirt, and grey suit, a la Mr. DiCaprio, who was recently spotted modelizing his way through Cannes. Looking dapper, nonetheless.

Modern Cocktail
Hitting a cocktail party after work, ladies? Easily the quickest day-to-night jump comes courtesy of the little black sheath dress. Here, Ellen Page rocks a sexy little cut-out, made office-appropriate when you throw on your favourite blazer before heading out the door first thing in the morning.

And boys, channel rising star Oscar Isaac when prepping for an after-work party. His short-sleeved dress shirt and slim fit pants are stylish and easy-to-wear, right?
