A Standing Ovation for a Night at the Opera

With the grips of winter seemingly behind us, a chock-full new season of spring flings is hitting the scene and, with that, charitable causes brought to life by some signature party events. And just in time, too, as it seems the city’s young professional set has caught a bad case of spring fever that has them out party-working several times a week. Lucky for us that, with a good dose of stamina, we get to be right along with them to bring you the highlights.

Top billing this week goes to the National Bank’s ‘Night at the Opera’, the goal of which was to raise funds in support of the Opéra de Montreal (OdM), and to introduce young leaders (i.e. future supporters) to the genre  and give them the opportunity to experience it in a unique setting.

This year, new meaning was given to ‘backstage pass’ as the event had attendees come together behind the scenes of Salle Wilfrid-Pelletier and amid the scenery from the company’s production of Engelbert Humperdinck’s Hansel and Gretel. Having caught the opening night’s show, I was especially keen to see how the two-dimensional backdrops came together in layers to give the illusion of a magical forest in which the title characters get lost.

Back to event-speak, where great backing means great results, and behind this soirée was a partner roster that guaranteed success.

Organization credit goes to the Young Associates of the OdM Committee, a powerhouse list made up of 13 individuals from backgrounds in finance, law, medicine, and entrepreneurship. Honourary Presidency was chaired by online menswear shopping brand Frank and Oak co-founders Hicham Ratnani, and Ethan Song, with omnipresent Air France decking out the VIP section like a lux airport lounge, complete with white leather seating, uniformed flight attendants making sure our glasses were never empty, and cone-shaped towers of iconic macarons worthy of Ladurée – le tout très joli!
