Notable Now this week in Calgary: Sip and Savour, an early Cinco de Mayo celebration, the opening of Revolution Fitness, a Wizard of Oz prequel performance, Chefly at Festival Hall and Lady Gaga making a stop in the city on her artRave tour

Sip and Savour
How are you planning to start your Friday night? If you work close to downtown you can visit Zyn in Banker’s Hall starting at 4pm to sample a super selection of high-end wines, top-shelf liquors and artisan craft beers. The Sip and Savour tasting costs $27 and you’re welcome to stay until 7pm. You’ll be forgetting about those spreadsheets and deadlines in no time at all. To save your spot you can RSVP to tara@zyn.ca and to see what other exciting events are coming up at Zyn, click here.

Time For a Fiesta
On Saturday, May 3rd you can start celebrating Cinco de Mayo a little bit early with Contemporary Calgary and the Mexican Consulate. That’s right, no shortage of limes is going to stop this party. This fundraiser will have all the makings of a great fiesta including piñatas, a back alley BBQ and a margarita competition. You won’t want to leave! All proceeds go towards Contemporary Calgary (117 8th Avenue SW), the new art collective dedicated to bringing the city the very best in art

Surfing in YYC
Revolution Fitness is now open. This funky new studio is conveniently located on 17th Avenue and is giving Calgarians a crazy new way to work out. Whether you’re into water sports or not, you’ll love sweating it out on the studio’s custom surfboards. The Surf Salutations yoga classes are also a great way to get fit for the summer. On May 3rd, Revolution Fitness is having an open house so you can come and see what all the hype is about. Sign for Saturday here.

Feeling Wicked?
The Wizard of Oz is one of the most beloved stories of all time, but have you ever wondered what happened before Dorothy arrived in the fantastical Land of Oz? Gregory Maguire’s novel, Wicked, is a prequel that tells that story of two young girls, one gorgeous and the other one green, who would one day become the Wicked Witch of the West, and Glinda the Good Witch of the North. This fascinating novel is now a hit Broadway show and from July 23rd to August 17th the theatre production of Wicked will be playing at the Jubilee Auditorium. Tickets go on sale May 5th. To purchase tickets, click here.

Chefly
As part of the City Palate’s 20 for 20 events this year, YYC’s favourite foodie magazine has partnered with the Calgary Folk Festival and the Calgary Underground Film Festival to create a unique collection of silent film shorts featuring talented local chefs. While the films play there will be live music to accompany each reel. Following the screening, guests are invited to stick around for snacks and refreshments that were referenced in the film. The screening will take place on May 7th at Festival Hall.

Lady Gaga
Miss Gaga will be bringing her crazy energy and one-of-a-kind presence to the Scotiabank Saddledome on May 25. This hit maker and superstar diva will be stopping through on her artRave tour, which is sure to keep the crowd pumped up with over-the-top costumes and brilliant sets. Tickets won’t be around for much longer and it would be a shame to miss such an epic performance that will have people talking for months.
