Hot Art Underground: Contemporary Calgary’s LOOK2014

If you prefer couture over costumes, the LOOK2014 gala taking place this weekend is going to be right up your alley. Don’t miss out on a sneak peak of what’s sure to be one of Calgary’s new signature spaces for art and culture. Did we mention there’s a chance to win a $10,000 shopping spree?

More into Holt’s than Halloween?

We hear you.

Which is why we’re now telling you to head to Contemporary Calgary’s LOOK2014 gala taking place this Saturday, November 1st.

The Centennial Planetarium on the west side of downtown is getting a serious makeover and the iconic building that was once home to the science centre will soon be transformed into the new Contemporary Calgary Art Gallery.

As Contemporary Calgary’s Erin O’Connor explained, “We are giving Calgarians a first “LOOK” at the vision of a new contemporary art gallery in the Planetarium.”

Taking inspiration from the gallery’s fortress-like structure the theme this weekend is ‘hot art in a cool underground space’. Which basically means a VIP experience that will feel like the world’s best art party in a chic bunker.

Think Berlin meets the Guggenheim.

Even if you’re not in the know about modern art you’ll probably recognize names like Chris Cran, Danny Singer, and Manufactured Landscapes’ Ed Burtynsky, whose art will all be available in the silent auction.

And if you haven’t heard of Chris Cran then you need to Google ‘Self-Portrait With the Combat Nymphos Of Saigon’ right now.

Beyond having the chance to take home something impressive to hang on your wall, guests will also be invited to bid on trips to the prestigious Venice Bienalle and art tours of New York, Montreal, and Toronto.

Even if bidding isn’t your game, this will still be the best art party happening in 2014 with catering by Chef Duncan Ly and Music from YYC’s DJ Rice.

And if you really need something to sweeten the deal, consider the fact that prizes for West Jet flights and a $10,000 shopping spree to Holt Renfrew will also be drawn during the evening.

So if you’re a fan of swanky affairs and are still on the fence about what to do this weekend, ditch the Elvis impersonator and wonder woman costumes and head to an epic party in one of Calgary’s new cultural hot spots.
