U of T’s School of Continuing Studies Now Has a Course on How to Find Your Dream Job

One of the best universities in the country is offering a course to help you land your dream job.

Sure, it’s easy for most of us to name our “dream job.”

But every pavement-pounding young professional knows that defining your dream job and actually obtaining it are two different things all together. It’s on the “how” where we all seem to get stuck.

Wouldn’t it be amazing if we were armed with the tools to make our dream job happen—a practical roadmap to success?

Now, one of the best universities in the country is offering just that, led by one of the most seasoned career coaches in the industry. The University of Toronto (U of T)’s School of Continuing Studies is offering a course on how to land your dream job, aptly called “Design Your Dream Job: Fundamentals.”

And yes, it sounds a lot cooler than anything we took at university, too.

The course won’t take up too much time in your hectic lifestyle either, so don’t even consider quitting your day job. It’s comprised of an online webinar and a live session, with recorded video provided after the session (so you don’t have to frantically take notes like you did back in the day).

Scheduled over two separate weeks, the workshop is delivered in sessions of two-hours each. There is a homework exercise to be completed and submitted between the first and second sessions.

The course promises to help you articulate what it is you want from your next ideal opportunity before you go out looking for it. As a learner, you’ll understand how to better define (because you can always better define) what you want, who you want to work with, what kind of corporate culture you want to be a part of, and what kind of contribution you want to make.

Basically, you’ll learn to define how you really want to spend your workdays.

With the knowledge of what your dream job actually entails (the good, bad and challenging), you’ll learn how to apply it to your job search, and how to convey it in your resume and cover letter. A relevant, concise resume is an art in itself, after all.

In the first half of the two-part workshop, you will explore why so many of us aren’t happy at work (no, it isn’t just you and your group of friends) and learn a new and effective philosophy of career design that will help you create work that is fulfilling and engaging.

If you’re going to work, you may as well like what you do. Let’s face it: Retirement is a long way away.

That’s why you’ll use elements of design thinking to prototype your ideal future, and what happens if you keep living life exactly as you are today (also known as “your default future”).

During week two, you’ll learn to smash the assumptions that keep you from creating your dream job, and learn the tools that will take you from where you are today to a life where you get to live your legacy at work. You’ll even emerge armed with a networking pitch that tells the world exactly what it is that you’re looking for.

The course instructor, Elatia Abate, is a coach and entrepreneur who left the corporate world to revolutionize the way people think about careers and making money. With experience that includes coaching Fortune 500 companies, and work that has appeared in publications like The Wall Street Journal and Fast Company, it’s safe to say she knows a thing or two about career growth.

Take two evenings to free yourself from 100-hour workweeks, meaningless Excel models and office politics, while exploring your phenomenal potential.

Much like we urban young professionals don’t want to simply settle on our restaurant and Netflix choices, why would we settle for a default future? Seriously, we owe it to ourselves to strive for more. So, if you’re going to make any investment, make this one. It’s not too late to make it your New Year’s resolution to design your next job instead of taking whatever comes your way.

The next course starts soon, so you may want to get in gear now. The course will take place April 18 and 25, from 7:00pm to 9:00pm EST.
