This is not an April Fools’ Day joke – a “computer on a stick” is ready to roll.
Set for release mid-2015, the Asus Chromebit can turn any screen (LCD display, your TV, etc.) into a computer and will be available for less than $100. Together with Google’s $150 Chromebooks, the affordable magic sticks open up a world of doors for those who may otherwise not have had access to a computer.
The cigar-size stick will run Chrome OS and be able to operate most basic functions of a regular PC, from word processors and spreadsheets and email to online video.
“It’s the perfect upgrade for an existing desktop and will be really useful for schools and businesses,” Google said of the device. The product advances Chrome’s already expanding influence on the software market for business and educational institutions.
Stealing Microsoft’s share, of course, will be a bit of a challenge.
