A Saudi Arabian prince has urged his country to join the 19th century in announcing that women should finally have the right to drive.
Prince Alwaleed bin Talal sent the following tweet yesterday, declaring “Stop the debate. Time for women to drive.”

A link to the tweet leads to a lengthy document that highlights the political, religious, social, and economic benefits of allowing 43 per cent of the population to drive – with restrictions.
“Allowing women to drive would ultimately … bring us in step with the rest of the countries of the world, including all Muslim ones. Saudi Arabia should not remain the odd man out!” wrote the prince.
Alwaleed bin Talal is one of very few among Saudi Arabia’s upper brass to advocate for women’s rights. Earlier this year, he pledged to donate his $32 billion fortune to various charities, some of which are committed to empowering women.
It should be noted that before last year, women weren’t even allowed to run for government or vote. Progress is relative, we suppose.
