We all need a good list of go-to day spots to indulge in some midday drinks; places that are busy and have a good vibe during office or weekend day hours for those afternoons you want to get started early. What makes a bar notable for day drinking? We made our list based on the following factors: business, beverage quality, and coolness. Here are our favorites that meet all the qualifications…
Cafe Laika
This St. Laurent street bar has been a favourite amongst Plateau neighborhood residents for many years now. Location is everything, and this location in itself is a major selling point – right in the heart of the main. Cafe Laika is ‘loungey’ and laid-back, always packed with Montreal’s coolest.
McGibbin’s Pub on Bishop
Another popular daytime drinks spot, McGibbin’s is located just off the main Crescent pub drag and is almost always packed during the day-time hours with people who all are looking for the same thing: great beer and a good vibe for an afternoon drink. In the summertime, they offer a huge courtyard terrace they have a full bar menu for those looking for a snack or a late lunch along with their brews.
Le Chien Fumant
Although only open for brunch/lunch on the weekends, Le Chien Fumant has proven to be one of the best brunch spots to take in a few cocktails in the city. Offering up some of the best mixed drinks in the country (as one of the owners is an ex-bartender from Distillerie), this is the place to be for brunch and cocktails on a Saturday or Sunday.
Dieu de Ciel
This Laurier East spot is one of our favourite brewpubs in the city. On top of that, it’s one of the most happening day-time drinking bars in town. Dieu de Ciel is now known worldwide for their fantastic beer. Opening early afternoon, by 3pm this place is packed with people looking for a home brew with good friends in a cool atmosphere.
