We were invited back to sample the latest and greatest culinary creations. A good catering company can make a party happen in any space, and The Lazy Gourmet has worked at some of the best venues in the city.
To show off their skills, they select a new locale each time they host their twice-yearly menu previews. This time we arrived at CBC Studios where we were invited upstairs to Studio 700. Often used as a film set, the space is built as a blank canvas to make television magic come alive. The evening’s setup featured dramatic black draping and spotlights, evoking a theatrical feeling. Adding to the effect, News Now with Ian Hanomansing was broadcasting live just across the hall.
Anchored in the center of the room was a large double-sided bar, where the evening’s signature cocktail was served. A perfect fall treat, the drink was a sweet and fragrant concoction of earl grey, vanilla vodka, cream and salted caramel. The only ingredient missing was a crackling fireplace.
The food was undoubtedly the star of the show, and between numerous buffet stations and a constant rotation of passed hors d’oeuvres, no guest left hungry. Though Thanksgiving had just passed, guests gravitated towards miniature interpretations of a classic holiday dinner, like the Yorkshire pudding with pepper rubbed beef and caramelized onions, or the steam bun filled with roasted turkey, cranberry mayo, pickled cucumbers and radish sprouts.
More exotic choices, like crab with jicima kimchi and Peruvian citrus chicken, created an interesting balance and more than satisfied our appetite.
