Ranking countries on desirability is always a dodgy exercise.
But times are tough and validation is getting fewer and far between, so here’s something to feel good about until you close the tab: people think Canada is really, really great.
While we probably already knew that, this sentiment comes from outside our borders. According to a recent poll conducted by Gallup, 47 million people want to move to Canada. This was determined by asking potential migrants around the world which country they would choose as their ideal destination.
The United States is the most desired destination by a long shot, counting nearly 160 million people who’d rather move there than anywhere else in the world. Germany rounds out the top three, with 42 million respondents choosing it as the most desirable destination.
The research is based on 453,122 interviews in 152 countries between 2010 and 2017. The results were then broken into percentages to determine a number (in millions of people) with all potential migrants in the world considered. According to the poll, 15 percent of the world’s adults (750 million people) would like to move to another country if they had the chance.
