American Eagle Outfitters’ lingerie and swimwear line, Aerie, has impressed us with its use of untouched and unedited photos the past two years.
For the latest #AerieREAL campaign, which features “real” women, “real” bodies and no Photoshopping, Aerie brought in 19-year-old model Barbie Ferreira, who is a self described “curve model” to be the face of the brand.
Ferreira was a refreshing addition to the campaign, as her body type is scarcely seen in the fashion world.
All of the images in the #AerieREAL ads have promoted beautiful women with varying physiques, welcoming natural body “imperfections,” beauty marks, and tattoos. Breaking the tradition that lingerie or bikini models should only be of a certain size or look.
The campaign video,”Real Talk With Barbie,” shows the body image advocate lounging by a pool in a hot pink bikini, saying she will never apologize for being herself, “no matter what anyone’s opinion of me is.”
The video promotes the idea that all women should feel comfortable and beautiful in their skin and that you don’t have to have a perfectly toned body to feel great in a bikini.
During the video Ferreira says, “the world needs more women who are strong.” Which is exactly why Aerie brought her on board.
“We cast Barbie because she’s got nothing to hide, she’s strong and beautiful — she embraces her real self, which is the spirit of the Aerie Real message,” Jen Foyle, Aerie’s global brand president, told Refinery29.
The full ads haven’t been released yet, but a teaser video is now on Aerie’s YouTube page. Watch it below.
